What is MCS and why does it matter?
MCS is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, and it’s the industry standard for quality and safety. Choosing an MCS-accredited installer means your system is certified, which is often required for export payments. Edge Electricals and Solar is a MCS accredited installer.
What services does Edge Electricals and Solar offer?
Edge Electricals and Solar provides solar panel installation, maintenance, and consultation services across the United Kingdom for both residential and commercial properties. We also offer battery storage and inverter solutions to help you maximise efficiency, store excess energy, and stay powered during outages.
How can solar energy benefit my home or business?
Solar energy reduces electricity bills, increases property value, and contributes to environmental sustainability by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.
Can I make money by selling extra solar energy back to the grid?
Yes! Through the UK’s Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), you can earn money by exporting unused solar energy back to the grid. Your energy supplier pays you for each unit of electricity you send, helping reduce your payback time and increasing your long-term return on investment. It’s a great way to turn your roof into a revenue stream.
Can I expand my solar system later if my energy needs change?
Yes, most solar systems are designed to be expandable. If you add an electric vehicle, home extension, or just use more energy, you can usually install more panels or upgrade your inverter and battery system to match. Just make sure your initial setup allows for future upgrades, we can help plan for that from day one.
Will my solar system work on cloudy or rainy days?
Yes! Solar panels still work in cloudy weather. They run on light, not heat, so as long as it’s daytime, they’re producing.
Will I be off-grid with solar?
No. Your home will stay connected to the National Grid. Solar panels reduce how much electricity you buy, but you can still draw from the grid when needed. If you add a battery, you can store excess energy to use later.
In a power cut, your electrics normally turn off for safety. Some battery systems offer a limited backup supply, but you’d need to choose this option when designing your system.
Do I need planning permission for rooftop solar at my home?
In most cases, no. Solar panels on pitched and flat roofs are classed as permitted development. However, there are exceptions for listed buildings and some conservation areas.
How much electricity could my system generate in a typical year?
It depends on the size of the system, the direction of your roof, and how much shading there is. We’ll provide a personalised generation estimate during your consultation.
What is an export tariff and how does it work?
An export tariff pays you for the electricity you send back to the grid. To qualify, you’ll need a smart meter and to register with a supplier that offers one. We’ll also provide your DNO certificate, which you’ll need to set up your Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
What warranties come with the panels, inverters, and batteries?
Our panels come with a 30-year performance warranty and a 25-year product warranty. Inverters and batteries typically come with 10-12-year product warranties.
How do I access my live solar and battery data?
You’ll be given access to the manufacturer’s monitoring app. It lets you track generation, battery storage, and energy use in real time.
Who will install and support my system?
Your system will be installed and supported by Edge Electricals and Solar.
Can I pay in stages? What deposit is required?
Yes. If you’re paying in cash, we ask for a 25% deposit before installation, with the remaining balance due on completion.
How long does a typical installation take?
Most installations are completed in 1-3 days. Larger or more complex systems may take a little longer.
